Fort Lauderdale, FL – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected in a 5-4 ruling the Trump administration’s rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, calling it “arbitrary and capricious.” The ruling comes on the week marking the eight-year anniversary of President Obama taking this important step to protect these young people, brought here as children. For Our Future Florida released the following statement:
“Today’s ruling on DACA means many communities here in Florida can breathe a temporary sigh of relief that ‘home is here.’
“The fact is the vast majority of Americans believe we should protect DREAMers. Here in Florida, DACA has allowed thousands of young people to go to school and work to build a stronger economy and a brighter future for our state. They’ve protected us on the front lines of the coronavirus fight, and without their contributions, Florida could lose as much as $1.5 billion in annual GDP.
“Trump’s failure in the courts today is also a reminder of how important this election is. The DACA community still sits in limbo, and we still need comprehensive immigration reform that protects DREAMers and their families. To do so, we need to work harder than ever to elect Joe Biden and a Democratic majority in Congress.”
